  • Closest to Rio, and best known, is Petropolis, famous as the Summer residence of Brazil’s Emperor Dom Pedro.
 

 

 

 

 

  • During the great heat of carioca Summers, the entire court moved to this Alpine-like town only one hour’s drive from Rio. His palace, now the Imperial Museum, the Santos Dumont Museum and the arboretum all provide a days’ worth of sightseeing.

  • One of Rio’s best restaurants (and also a delightful inn) is Locanda Delle Mimosa. It is just outside town and combined with a visit to the main sights makes for a great outing.
