Bariloche
is a quaint Swiss like town and is often considered the cradle of
South American skiing. Bariloche, located in the heart of Argentina's
Patagonia, is the gateway to the ski area "Gran Catedral". A short
8 miles from town, the resort offers frequent bus service to and from
town. No other Argentinian ski area can match Bariloche in nightlife,
dining, cinemas, theater, eight discos and a casino. It is now possible
to stay at the base of the ski area, but for better night life and
town atmosphere, stay at hotels in the center of town. The first of
four chairlifts swings skiers up from the base station at 3,200 feet,
to the Plateau, which sits at 4,000 feet. More challenging skiing
lies above, with a summit known as the Piedra del Condor, or Stone
of the Condor. Here are wide-open snow fields and long gullies, all
above the timberline, where the snow is most reliable at this relatively
low altitude resort. Bariloche offers skiable terrain for all levels
of ability and is served by eight double chairlifts, three t-bars,
seven Pomas and one cablecar. An expansion program is currently taking
place to substantially increase the 20,000 person, per hour uphill
capacity by replacing many of the draglifts with modern chairlifts.
