What to do? The Markets which stretch upwards and across a number of streets offer a huge variety of goods for everyday needs as well as a section known as the "Witches Market", which has unusual ingredients for numerous potions. Allow plenty of time to look at the food. The people try to answer your queries. It is good to go with a guide as language can be a problem. Ask the people if you can take photos. The Cathedrals and churches are historically and culturally very diverse and are really a very integral part of the culture and need to be visited to gain an understanding of the people and their city. The origins date from C16 and you find European and Indian symbolism intertwined. San Francisco Church and Convent was founded in 1549. The city of La Paz is best "walked" to appreciate the changes that have occurred in the establishment of the city. There have been, historically, three 'city centers' and the influence of each, helps you appreciate what we see today. Again a guide makes these areas come alive. Jaen Street is reminiscent of colonial Spain, with the winding narrow cobbled street and the courtyards to former grand residences. It retains its colorful vibrance. There are some interesting museums to visit: Murillo House Museum with carved furniture, colonial paintings, coins and silver. Museo de Oro (Gold Museum) A small, but vital collection showing objects from pre-Columbian era. Replica of the Tiahuanacu semi-underground temple, which is situated opposite the Hernando Siles football stadium. In the centre of the temple is the "Pachamama", which is 7.3m in height and weighs 16 tons. If time does not allow you a visit to Tiahuanacu, which needs at least a half day, this can at least provide an indicator to the wonders that exist there. But we thought it well worth a visit. The folk shows (peñas) provide good entertainment with lively music , singing and dancing. Tapes by the performers are often on sale. There is a range of venues offering a meal and/or drinks. What and where to buy? Silver and textiles. In the Sagarnaga Street you will find many little shops with economic prices. Length of stay? Naturally it depends on your lifestyle but at least two weeks would be a minimum time to spend here. Best time to go April to October Money matters Take American dollars in small denominations. They must be in crisp, perfect condition or they will be rejected. Visa card is accepted in many places in the city. Food The food is particularly enjoyable and spicy. It's a good idea to ask for the special of the day which is usually a three course meal beginning with soup, then a main course followed by a dessert. This is usually very reasonably priced. The best idea is to eat local food. It's delicious. Especially try empanadas, soups and ????? Nearby attractions
